SALAM: Closure of Al-Wasat Newspaper by Bahraini authorities demonstrates gross infringement on freedom of opinion and expression

In another step taken to constrict views and suffocate the right and freedom to opinion and expression, the Bahraini authorities late at night yesterday took the drastic and unlawful decision to cease printing and distribution of the only independent newspaper in the country – Al-Wasat Newspaper (established on 7/9/2002).

The decision relies on unverifiable evidence and unsupported reasons, and infringes of the Bahraini constitution (articles 24) and the Press Law (article 28). The articles clearly states that the closure of any newspaper must arise by a judicial decision. Further, the decision infringes on the international agreements that bestow the rights of freedom of opinion and expression, which Bahrain has both signed and ratified.

One of the accusations posed by the authorities is that the newspaper “publishes and broadcasts news which cause division in society”. Regarding such a contradictory statement, SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights has noted many instances where national media officials have, in the press, on TV, and in social media platforms, released and articulated extremely prejudice and inflammatory remarks. Many times, it is officials that preach such inflammatory remarks – especially against the Shia Bahraini majority – which the judiciary inexplicably turns a blind eye to. We believe such inflammatory remarks are planned for specific political motives, which explains the freedom provided to the officials, whilst others with independent opinions, whether an organisation or individual, are criminalised and pursued.

SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights confirms that the situation in Bahrain has reached a dangerous height where the Bahraini authorities authorise and support sectarian and divisive rhetoric. Whilst criminalising and prosecuting citizens with opposition opinion and views against sectarianism and division.

SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights demands of the international community in all its forms and bodies to protect freedom of opinion and expression in Bahrain, and enforce international agreements as domestic laws have been exploited to serve the politics of the ruling powers in Bahrain.
