SALAM: Execution sentence against Sheikh Nimr is politically motivated and should be condemned

A Saudi court has issued an execution order against Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr who is a prominent Shia figure in Saudi Arabia. The order is based on political factors and is justified using very obscure and unclear reasons that do not warrant this grave decision. The judgment is in contravention to international agreements and standards, in particular the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and International Declaration of Human Rights.
Bahrain SALAM stresses deep concerns regarding this unjust and unjustified decision that widely infringes on human rights, and would certainly have deeper implications seeing as Sheikh Nimr is one of the most prominent Shia figures in Saudi Arabia. This decision will result in greater sectarian division and targeting instigated and led by groups with extremist ideologies.
Bahrain SALAM demands of the international community and human rights organisations to condemn this decision, denounce the deteriorating human rights situation in Saudi Arabia, pressure the country to revoke the judgment and swiftly release Sheikh Nimr who has never committed a crime but rather persecuted for his expression of opinion.
