Urgent Appeal to World Leaders: Intervene and Stop Sheikh al-Nimr’s Execution in Saudi Arabia

SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights issues an urgent appeal to the world’s leaders regarding the execution sentence of Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr in Saudi Arabia, to intervene or apply significant pressure on the Saudis to halt the sentence. Yesterday both the Saudi High Court and Court of Appeal approved the death sentence, leaving only the agreement of King Salman for the execution to be carried out.

The legalities of the execution sentence of Sheikh al-Nimr are mired in obscurities, faults and contraventions. In addition, Saudi Arabia have a long history of outrageous human rights abuses, ignoring international pressures and agreements, whilst carrying out executions without pause.

SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights have followed the sentencing of Sheikh al-Nimr and observed the complete absence of procedures, clear decision-making, impartial judiciary, or transparency in the sentencing. All decisions and analyses confirm that Sheikh al-Nimr’s execution sentence is politically-motivated in the absolute sense – with all procedures, impartiality, transparency and fairness ignored by the Saudis to expedite his sentence.

SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights appeals to you specifically to expeditiously intervene and stop the execution by the Saudi authoritarian regime. The execution of Sheikh al-Nimr is designed to inflame sectarian divide, with intent to drive a discriminatory and malicious agenda that will further convolute and escalate the human rights situation.
